The Field of the Cloth of Gold

June 1520

This Week in the Past is brought to you by Blast From the Past, an educational service which provides History workshops for Primary schools across the South West of England. These workshops include the life and reign of Henry VIII.
This was a summit between Henry VIII and Francis I which took place between June 8th and 26th of June. It was given this name because the tents were made of golden cloth. A tournament field was in place for jousting to take place. The reason for the summit was to strengthen the bond between England and France from a previous treaty made in 1514.

This took place within Calais the English held part of France. Despite the pleasantries for the two and a half weeks following their first meeting, the two kings engaged in political one-upmanship. They and their attendants took each other on on the tournament field at jousting and by foot combats, with bouts of wrestling, and through great banquets at which each tried to out-do the other’s lavishness and hospitality.

The Life and Reign of Henry VIII

Born at the Royal Palace on the banks of Greenwich London on June 28th 1491, Henry the second son of Henry VII became the second Tudor monarch. He reigned for 38 years and during that time will be remembered for being the king who had six wives. But his time as king involved so much more than this. My Henry VIII workshop explores the main events during this time and asks the question “What did the Tudors do for us?”.

Doing these kind of updates is a good way of introducing different specific topics to the site which people might be searching for.

      Hi Paddy
Is it possible to have 2 blog pages? I am thinking of having one for news with posts about school jobs and new resources and one for this week in the past?
